Environmental Justice Element
The City of Imperial is developing an Environmental Justice Element to achieve compliance with SB 1000 law, which requires cities to address environmental justice issues, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
WHAT IS IT?
The Environmental Justice Element (EJ) will identify disadvantaged communities and set goals, policies, and programs to address factors influencing health outcomes, including pollution burden, access to transportation, access to open space, housing conditions and affordability, as well as civic engagement. The EJ will focus on improving overall community health through broad, citywide policies that focus on health, equity, and removing barriers to healthy living.
Specifically, the EJ Element aims to:
- Reduce pollution exposure
- Promote public facilities
- Promote food access
- Promote safe and sanitary homes
- Promote physical activity
- Reduce any additional unique or compounded health risks
- Promote civic engagement in the public decision-making process
- Prioritize improvements and programs that address the needs of disadvantaged communities
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The EJ Element will help the city reduce health risks caused by pollution and prioritize the most affected residents. In Imperial, some neighborhoods face more pollution, lack green spaces, or have limited access to clean water, healthy food, and transportation than others. These burdens aren’t shared equally, leading to higher health risks. The Environmental Justice Element is about addressing these inequities and making sure no community is left behind.
